University's
Students to
Volunteer in
New Orleans
BY ROBERT GANNONE
Staff Wnter
The University of Scranton
Center for Social Action and
Service Initiatives will be sponsoring
service trips in January to New
Orleans, in the hopes of assisting
the victims ravaged by Hurricane
Katrina.
The trips will be held during
lntcrsession. The first will run
from Jan. 14 to Jan. 21. The second
will run from Jan. 21 to Jan 28.
The students will work with
Catholic parishes and communities
that have been hit with the
most damage from Hurricane
Katrina. Volunteers will be assisting
with many physical tasks such
as helping clear debris, remove
sheet rock, and assisting with the
cleanup of homes and yards.
"So far, we've had a great
response about students interested
in the trip," Director of
Collegiate Volunteers Patricia
Vaccaro said.
An information session for the
trips will be held on Thursday,
Nov. 3 from 5 to 6 p.rn in the trophy
room of the Eagen
Auditorium on first floor Cunster.
There will be a limit of 20 students
who can go on each trip to
New Orleans. If more than 40 stu-
• dents sign up for the service trips
then 40 students will be chosen by
a random lottery, according to
Vaccaro.
Voccaro says there will be at
least one priest from the area with
the students and will help them
reflect on how the hurricane
affected the communities.
