years from now ... there
will be great satisfaction
Following the U.S. Marshal
Service's acceptance of a $500,000
bid, the University is the .new owner
of lhe.fo~~ l.l-~o~~.s~~·.,: . i~ tl!~ "'! c.~~~\tt!i>~~~t ~ _, .... '<:0 ... ~~·~
The $500,000 bid, which was
the University's maximum, was
previously rejected. The Marshal
Service, however, asked University
officials to resubmit the· bid,
and it was accepted last month, sciid
Glenn Pellino, vice president for
planning.
After the building wa8 seized by
the federal government, the University
made several. offers to buy
the property but was unsuccessful
because the Marshal Service initially
required a minimum bid of
$800,000.
On Oct. 29, the govennnent re-
- jectcd the Univ~ty's most recent
bid, but local newspapers announced
on Dec. 17 that the
University's last bid was accepted.
••our principal interest in the
Hazzouri property was ... its- location
and, secondly, because we have
needs for additional space in a
nwnber of areas always emerging,"
Pellino said. He said another important
feature of Hazzouri's is its ·
underground parking area. .
In a letter to the University
community. the Rev. J.A. Panuska,
SJ., University president, said the
University was also interested in
the empty lots adjacent to the site of
the Center for Eastern Christian
Studies on Mulbeny Street.
· University officials have not yet
decided what the building will be
comer of campus.'
The Rev.
J.A. Panuska, S.J ..
used for, but Pellino said they hope
to make a decision within a month
••so that a move can be made during
the summertime."
Options under consideration are -
support services, such as safety and
security, the print shop, student
services, such as the Counseling
Center or Health Services. the DICE
office or a student activities center.
••While we have considered
possible uses, we have not made
any final decisions," Panuska said
in his letter. ••At least two dozen
proposals are being considered. We
will not rush a decision."
••Jt is highly unlikely we would
relocate anything in the spring
semester because remodeling or
renovations would push off the
time," Pellino said.
He stated that engineers are
currently completing a ••thorough
evaluation of the building and its
systems," and the University will
make the best match it can.
"I have no doubt that 10 years
from now, and even in a briefer time
frame. there will be great satisfaction
in the completion of this comer
of campus," Panuska stated.
