Scranton police and University security
are investigating rape allegations made by an
18-year-old female visitor to the campus.
The woman told police· she went to Martin
Hall, a dormitory in the lower quad, early
Saturday morning with a male University
student she met at a party earlier in the Hill
Section.
Later, when she left the second-floor room
to go to the bathroom, two unidentified males
attacked her, forced her outside the dormitory
and stripped her, she said While one of
the males pinned her to the ground, the other
raped her, she said
After calling a taxi to take her home, the
itlleged- victim was taken to Moses Taylor
Hospital where a rape test was administered,
police said Hospital officials notified police
of the alleged rape after the test was given.
·Detective Lieutenant Anthony Pica, whose
office is investigating the alleged assault,
stressed the importance this case carries with
city police.
"We initially withheld reporting the incident
because of the girl's traumatization,"
Pica said "I assure you, however, that we are
engaged in a very active investigation."
Pica stated that the evidence gathered so
far shows that the alleged rapists were not
University students but he declined to pinpoint
the issue any further for fear of jeopardizing
the investigation.
would advise that female students pair off
when walking."
While the incident has left many students
worried for their safety, the University annotmced
that the visitation policy which was
violated on Saturday will be strictly enforced.
In a memo addressed to all resident students,
James T. Bryan, vice president for Student
Affairs, stated "We have all been reminded
this weekend what can happen when rules are
ignored. Violations of the University's visitation
policy will be taken very seriously."
"I think people have lost focus of why
these (visitation) rules were originally made,"
said Kevin Siebecker, a junior from Endicott,
N.Y. and the second-floor Martin Hall resi- ·
dent assistant. ..They originated to protect
visitors and the residents of the dorms."
The University student who took the alleged
victim to his room after visitation hours
will appear before the University Review
Board for this violation, said Sicbecker. After
hearing the case, the review board will render
a decision which could range anywhere from
a frne and reprimand to suspension from the
University.
"The Martin residents, including myself,
didn't hear anything Friday night or early
Saturday morning," said Siebecker, who was
on duty Friday night and stated he was awake
until about 4 am. Saturday.
Siebccker said the Martin Hall residents
feel that their peers arc nervous about entering
the dorm.
Pictured is the outside of Martin Hall, located in the lower quad. An 18-yearold
woman said two men raped her outside of the hall early Saturday morning.
"We arc receiving full cooperation from
the University, the student body and the
dormitory residents," Pica said. "For the safety
of the student body at this time, though, I
"They feel excluded, but this incident
shouldn't be a direct reflection on the hall or
its residents," Siebccker said. "It could have .

Government auctions off Hazzouri's

By order of the United States
Marshall's Office. the property at
Mulbeny Street and North Webster
Avenue, fonnerly Hazzouri's Pharmacy,
is being offered for sale
through a sealed bid ending April
10. The property was seized last
year after owner Alex Hazzouri was
arrested for illegal drug possession.
Approximately 20 individuals
have expressed an interest in the
bidding,which requires an $800,000
minimum bid, said Robert Pomento,
property manager for Stratford
Development Inc., the company
handling the auction.
Bidders viewed the building at
an open house on March 25, said
Edward Popil, chief deputy for the
Middle States Marshall's Office.
The University does not intend
to make a bid, said Glenn Pellino,
vice president for planning.
Pellino said although the University
may be able to use the space,
the University will not bid because
the expenditure could be an inappropriate
use of tuition money.
The University is especially
concerned with the wide open space
within the building which would
have to be remodeled and could add
to the bidding cost, Pellino said
The University will monitor the
situation if the property is placed on
the market again, Pellino said.
Right now, $800,000 for 6,000
square feet is "higher than the cost
of new construction," Pellino said.
Popil said $800,000 is appropriate
for what the property has been
appraised to be worth.
