The Drainlll
The four departments and the
radio station which will all be
housed in Loyola Hall formerly
were spread out in imidequate
quarters contained in five different
buildings loc'ated on both the uptown
and downtown "campuses."
The Biology department .w a s
crowded into inadequate facilities
on the second and third floor of the
Main Building. In the ~ld days the
third floor quarters housed a gymnasium
and even now a visitor can
find some of the' old markings of the
basketball court.
• •
The chemistry department used to
keep, house in a special brick struc.
ture near the Main Building whose
~hie~ claim to fame was that it' was
a 'former livery stable.
••••••••••••••••••••••••
The radio station, now to be located
in the Loyola penthouse, used
to have ,its studios in #9 Platt Place,
a former home whose nearness to
the DL&W Railroad caused it to
reverberate with noise from the
railroad that interfered with broadcasting.
The engin'eering department used
to be located in the "E" Building,
with, the' ,exception of the drafting
r,oom '\Yhich was in, of all places, the
"Arts" Building. Th~ facilities in
· the ~'E" Building were inadequate
and left 'no room for expansioJ:1 of
· 'the department.
: .Sharing the "E" Building with the
engineering department was the
. Physics Department which moved
up on the hill when the- University
purchased the former Navy barracks
after' the last war. Before that the
Physics department had been located
in the Main Building where the
treasurer's office, is at the present
time.

If any institution of higher learning
was ever in need of centralized
facilities for its science departments,
it was the University of Scranton.
