Nurses
(Continued from page 4)
The nurses themselves seem to enjoy
attending classes at the all-male
university.
"The majority of the girls were
anxious for the first day of the new
term to begin because they wanted
to see how the boys would react to
us," explained Rita Remetta, a freshman
nursing student from State
Hospital.
She spoke for practically all her
clas~mates when she stated that they
have more of an advantage to be able
to use the university's facilities than
if they were relegated to those of the
nursing school alone.
The impressive exterior of the University of Scranton's newest and
largest dormitories enhances the eastern sector of the campus. The
resident halls, which have facilities to accommodate more than half
of the boarders, are the most recently completed phase in the extensive
redevelopmnt program.

from the Christian Brothers to
the Society of Jesus.
Fr. Nevils, who was active in' civic
affairs in the Scranton area, served as
head of the school until July 25,
1947, when he was succeeded by Rev.
J. Eugene Gallery, S.J. Fr. Nevils
died Oct. 12, 1955, while semng as
spiritual director of the Jesuit. community
at St. Ignatius Loyola Parish,
New York City.
Mr. Driscoll, a native of Dunmore,
was a graduate of East Stroudsburg
State Teachers College. He joined
the faculty of St. Thomas Prep, later
Scranton Prep, ,in 1~23, and two
years later received a bachelor of arts
degree from St. Thomas College, now
the University of Scranton. He received
a masters degree from Bucknell
University and pursued graduate
studies at Fordham and Syracuse
Universiti~s.
In 1961 he was named a charter
member of the university order, Pro
Deo et Universitate, which is designated
to honor faculty members and
administrators who serve the institution
for 20 years or more.
Mr. Driscoll died last year-his
forty-first year in the education field.
At the time of his death, he held the
longest record of faculty service to
the U. of S.
The University of ,Scranton on
Sunday, Sept. 12, officially opened to
the public its newest and largest residence
halls. The dormitories, named
for former U of S educators Very
Reverend W. Coleman Nevils, S.J.,
first Jesuit president at the University,
and James A. Driscoll, who
taught English here for more than 4·0
years, will house almost half of the
resident student population.
The buildings, located in the eastern
sector of the campus, will accomodate
only upper classmen during
their first year. They are entirely
fireproof and feature wall-to-wall
carpeting in rooms, corridors, and
waiting rooms. Construction costs for
the halls amounted to $725,000.
The buildings were introduced to
the public at an open house ceremony
at which members of the Nevils and
priscoll families inspected plaques in
memory of the' deceased educators.
The plaques are prominently displayed
in the halls.
Father Nevils was named President
of the University of Scranton July 7,
1942, during a meeting in the office
of the late William J. Hafey, Bishop
of Scranton.
At that meeting a new university
corporation was: formed and transfer
of all property, equipment, and funas
from the diocese to the corporation
was authorized. It was the final act
The richly carpeted rooms and corridors of the new dormitories pro·
vide the student with an inclination toward study, as well as making
that task a little bit easier to take. New lighting facilities and air
conditioning within the corridors add to the ultramodern decor of the
new buildings.
