Name The Glen Alden Building
NAME
THE GLEN ALDEN BUILDING
Members of the University community will have the
opportunity to assist the administration this week in renaming
the latest campus '(or near campus) addition, the
Glen Alden Building.
The Very Rev. Aloysius Galvin, S.J., President of the
University has requested, through the Public Relations
Office, that the students, faculty and staff submit suggestions
for a new name by AQUINAS ballot. Father
Galvin will make the final decision in the immediate
future.
$185,000
The Glen Alden Building was purchased last spring
at a cost of $1'85,000. The Jefferson Avenue structure
. will eventually be used for office space and a limited
num'ber of classrooms.
At the present time, several business concerns are
still located in the once commercial building. Some of
these concerns have leases running to 1971. 'Mr. Gavigan
of the ipublic Relations department stated: "The
University will not push anybody out. Many are leaving
of their own accord."
The University began using the 'building this past
semester by moving the offices 0'£ several Business Department
faculty mem:bers and the office 0'£ a member
of the 'Philosophy Department to the Glen Aluen address
last 'September. As to the ultimate function this latest,
yet unnamed acquisition will serve, the University is
undecided. 'Several ideas have ,been suggested, including
the transfer of the entire Business Department or
the Graduate 'School to the four storyy structure. However,
as Gavigan puts it, "The thing is open-ended. 1N0thing
has been definitely decided."
Name that ????
This is the fifteenth time in the last 10 years that
the University community must decide on a name for
a newly built or acquired building. In the past structures
have been tagged with names that honor University
benefactors (Lynett Hall, etc.); past Presidents
(Long Center, etc.); an honored 'faculty member ('Driscoll
Hall); and the name of the rounder of the \Society
of Jesus (Loyola Hall). St. Thomas Hall 'bears the
name that was associated with the University for the
first 50 years of its existence.
