President takes the post. How- '
ever, WNEP T.V. stated Friday
evening that according to the
Home Rule Charter, the President
of City Council would
definitely assume the office of
mayor. That position will be. up
for election on January 2 at 10
a.m., when the five council
members will vote to select their

At this lime it looks as though
either. james Dougherty' or
Richard Rossi 'will win. Others
have also suggested that conceivably
Mayor Eugene Peters would .
retain his seat until the final
court decision, but this seems
highly unlikely..
January.3 will see the first day'

Eugene Hickey (now leading Mr.

At 4 p.m. on Wednesday,
December 7, the Scranton
mayoral election entered yet
another chapter of its existence.
It was at this time that James
McNulty submitted the $150,000
bond which the courts required
of him before it would conduct the
hearings on the validity of the
election. With bond set on December
2, McNulty had all of five
days to collect the cash which he
claims came from "hundreds" of
supporters with no one person
donating more than $5,000.
After the bond was filed, the
courts set January 3 as the first
hearing date. In bringing the suit,
Mr. McNulty has claimed major
voter fr~ud directed against his
campaign in the November 8
election. He is asking the court to
throw out the vote tallies Qf
certain districts and to consider
invalidating the entire mayoral
election. If he wins., a new
election would probably be called
for ..If he loses, he loses all of the
$150,000 bond which was set for
the cost of transcriptions and
witness fees.
There has been much comment
on the high bond which was set in
this case. Granted, the Scranton
Times finally broke' through the
misconception that the bond in
the last attmpt to contest an'
election in Lackawanna County,'
in the 1971 Commissioner race of '.
Patrick Mellody, was set at
$100,000. In reality it was set at.~

Jesuits Pledge .100,000 to U. of S.
The Jesuit Community in-residence at the University of
Scranton has made a $100,000 pledge to the University of
Scranton's $6 million capital development program.
The gift brings the campaign total to within $700,000 of its $3
million short-term goal in the first 18 months. The campaign
officially began in Feb. 1977.
Fr. Frank MeG. Nugent, S.J., rector of the community, said '
the Jesuit Community is still considering an appropriate item in
the case statement of the' "Commitments to Excellence" program
for which the funds will be used. .
The five-year, $6 million de\1elopment program has a threefold .
commitment: $3.6 million to students; $1.5 million to faculty;
and $900,000 to the campus and local community. The Jesuit
Community gift can be designated for just one of thess areas, or
used to support more than one item in the case statement.
The net amount ofmoney returned by Jesuits is one of the most
important factors in the UofS growth and progress, according to
. University officials. Since 1945, the ·Jesuit Community has con-tributed
$2.3 million to the Uniwrsity.· .
This year's gift totaled $89,000. It represents teaching and
administrative salaries earned and returned by 26 of the 36-
, member community. .
