Plans for classroom building complete
BY CARLA MASCAR.O
Aquinas News Editor
Construction plans for the
new classroom building have
been finalized with the
awarding of a contract to
the S.G. Mastriani
Construction Comapany,
according to Glen Pellino,
vice president for planning
and development.
Work on the four-story
building, to be located at
Jefferson Avenue and
Linden Street, will begin
April 1 and is scheduled for
completion by August of
'88.
According to Pellino, the
S.G. Mastriani company,
which also built Redington
Hall, was selected by a
process of competitive
bidding.
The building will consist
of a 10,000 square-foot
bookstore, 16 classrooms, a
lecture hall, a board room
and a Z-brick terrace, said
James Devers, resident
architect at the University.
The terrace will act as an
extension to the Commons,
Devers stated.
"Demolition of the
~. Duckworth building is
scheduled for this summer,
and the lot may be ready
for use by this September,"
Devers said.
A ccording to Pellino, the
property on Jefferson
Avenue next to O'Hara Hall
has also been purchased by
the University and will be
converted into parking
space.
Improvements now visible
around campus originated
from a 1983 study
conducted by the Academy
for Educational
Development (AED), PeIIino
said.

The apartment 1,)uilding- at
427 Monroe Ave. has been
purchased by the University
for $37,500, according to
Glenn Pellino, vice president
for planning and .
development.
The apartment building
will be demolished and the
property reconverted into a
15-space parking lot which
will be adjacent to the
parking lot behind Rock
Hall, Pellino said.
He added that the
estimated cost to demolish
the building and grade the
15-space parking lot will be
approximately $12,000.
The purchase is part of a
"long-term parking program
that aims to find parking-space
contiguous with the
campus," Pellino explained.
He said that this program
is more cost-efficient than
building a single parking
structure.
Pellino added that when
all the factors are weighed
against each other, "this
type of plan makes more
sense and is more beneficial
in the long run."
"We maintain in the
budget an amount of money
for these opportunities,"
Pellino said.
Approximately $250,000 is
allotted each year for land
acquisition, he explained.
The total budget is not
always used each year, even
though the University is
always looking for available
parking space that can be
acquired at a reasonable
price, he added.
Pellino explained that the
reason why a parking lot
instead of additional student
housing was ,chosen for the
site was because it was not
suitable for the building of a
dormitory.
"This area is simply not
the place where the
University would choose to
house students," he said.
Demolition will take place
after the University takes
formal title of the property,
Pellino said. He added that the parking
lot construction should
begin before the end of the
spring semester.
At the present time,
however, no definite date
has been announced.
