Dorm construction on·, schedule ·
LAURA MALISZEWSKI
Aquinas News Staff
The construction of the residential
complex on Nevils' Beach
is progressing on schedule, according
to David G. Wilson, staff archi- .
teet. The dormitories should be
completed by July 15, 1991.
"July was the proposed fmishing
date for the construction,"
Wilson said. "The building has
been on schedule, and we attribute
this progress to good weather and
good organization on the part of
(the construction company)."
The residential complex will be
comprised of three connected
buildings housing 220 students.
Each dorm will have four levels
with a small lounge, except for the
first floor which will have a larger
lounge that will accommodate all
of its srudents.
"The dorms are being built
similar to the existing freshmen
donns with communal bathrooms
on each level," Wilson said •They
will differ in that each new residence
will have a pitched roof
instead of a flat roof."
Student Affairs will determine
whether the dorms will be singlesexed
or co-ed.
The new dormitories have not
been named yet.
•The Board of Tnistees makes
the final decision on the naming of
the buildings," said the Rev. J.A.
Panuska, SJ., University presidenL
"Each residence will have a name,
and there will be some general
name to include all closely-linked
buildings." -
Once ·the new residences are
completed, the University will
initiate the development of Quincy
Avenue into an extension of the
Commons. It ~ill be z-bricked,
and the neY(_path will be suuounded
by greenery and a few benches.
"'There will be no regular traffic
on this path, but it will used for
emergencies and possibly for fresh-man
moving-in day,'' Panuska said
"There will also be available
green space on Nevils • Beach,"
Wilson said. "The grass will be
more level than before the construction
took place."·
Another addition to the University
will be a pedestrian entrance
and gateway at Quincy Avenue
and Mulbeny StreeL
·The aass of 1985 has already
designated the accumulation of its
Senior Class Pledge to help pay for
the entrance, and it will be noted
on the gateway," Panuska said
New lighting similar to that on
the Commons will be placed along
Quincy A venue. The present .
wooden light poles will be replaced
in Gunster parking lot to match
those on Quincy, he said
"All these additions cannot
happen at mice, but they will be
completed as soon as funds become
available. The fmal cost is
uncertain, since the total job has
not yet been bid," Panuska said.

trees and lights line the path.
