Hyland Hall recognized for excellence

Hyland Hall, the University's
newest classroom building, was
one of 38 higher educational facilities
to be cited for design excellence
in a nationwide review
by American School and University
magazine.
The 44,000 square foot building,
completed in 1988, boasts 16
classrooms, a 180-seat lecture
hall, a student lounge, a board
room and the University bookstore.
According to University
spokesman Bill Genello, selection
for the award was based on
eight criteria, including sound
planning and responsiveness to
both regional design influences
and the requirements of the educational
process.
The building was designed by
Leung Hemmler Camayd P.C.,
the Scranton architectural firm
which designed Redington and
Gavigan halls and the new library.
Hyland Hall was the first building
submitted by the firm for the annual
review.
According to Alex Camayd, a
partner in the firm, the large open
corner in front of Hyland Hall allows
the building to integrate well
with its surroundings.
Imaginative use of renewable
resources was another factor in
selection, Genello said.
Camayd said that Hyland Hall
satisfied this requirement because
the building is heated with natural
gas and contains a "fairly sophisticated
and flexible control
system."
"Our goal was achieved at a
reasonable cost, and this recog-
The Registered Nurse
Scholarship Loan Program
at
Geisinger Wyoming Valley
Students generally have two important things
on their minds. One, the cost of their higher education.
And two, finding the right job following
graduation. The Registered Nurse Scholarship
Loan Program At Geisinger Wyoming Valley can
help people interested in a nursing career with both
concerns.
Here's how it works. Scholarships are awarded
to qualified recipients in their senior year of. a basic
registered nurse training program. An employment
commitment post graduation is associated with the
scholarship loan. At the end of the employment
commitment, the scholarship loan is considered
paid-in-full. Of course, registered· nurses will be
earning a salary and Geisinger Wyoming Valley's
complete benefit package, too.

nition underlines that success,"
said the Rev. J.A Panuska, S.J.,
University president.
The publication reported that
Hyland Hall's location "encourages
the students to explore the
downtown retail, dining and historic
areas."
Genello pointed out that this
statement holds especially true
for on-campus residents whose
world might otherwise be defined
by the boundaries of the University's
campus.
'We like to think that Hyland is
one of our best facilities," Genello
said. "It creates a nice atmosphere
and blends in nicely with
surrounding buildings."
Genello added that the building's
design creates an environment
which tends to enhance the
learning experience, which was
one of the criteria for selection.
Hyland Hall, the University's newest classroom building, is
cited for architectural excellence.
