Gradual. Italy, 14th century (14/2). 545 x 375 mm. Manuscript on parchment. Gothic liturgical script, with plainsong notation on a four line staff. With six miniature paintings (somewhat rubbed), painted initial letters, and elaborate penwork initials. Bound in old calf with metal corner pieces. Bologna school/influence, very competent painting and initial letters. 16th century calf binding.
Latin text begins folio 1r Ad te levavi a[nim]am meam deus meus…. First Sunday in Advent service. Text ends folio 183v Agnus dei q[ui] Tollis peccata mu[n]di m[I]se[re]re nobis Agnus.

1. 183, numbered in pencil upper right hand corner of recto by Michael Knies, Special Collections Librarian, February 15, 1999. Previous incomplete modern numeration by unknown person at unknown date in pencil lower left hand corner of verso 1-37. Folio 3 is an insert containing Pentecost painting. Various systems of numeration in Roman and Arabic numbers, in pencil and ink, some contemporary with the manuscript.
Writing Support
Flesh side is very white, hair side much darker and strongly patterned.
52r measured. Page 540 mm x 385 mm. Musical Staves 365mm x 255mm, Text and stave 382mm x 255mm.
Black ink or possibly pencil. Double vertical lines at edge of text block extend to top and bottom of page. Outermost vertical line is 90mm from edge, inner line is 100mm from edge. Innermost vertical line is 35mm from gutter and companion is 45. Horizontal rulings are 10mm apart. Total height of horizontal rulings is 395mm. Most horizontal rulings extend beyond the outermost vertical ruling, but end unevenly consequently width varies up to 300mm.
I11 (+3) II-XVII10 XVIII4 XVIIII8 Catchwords appear on each quire in lower right hand corner of verso until quire XVII in which the catchword was erased. The original numbering system ends on the same folio. The last quires, XVIII and XVIIII, may have been later additions or replacements.
