Antiphonal. Holland, May 7, 1497. 370 x 260mm. Manuscript on vellum, written in GothicLiturgical script withmusical notation on a 5 line staff. Bound in early pigskin with 3 (of 8) brass corner pieces; clasp fixtures present—clasps gone. Binding in poor condition, page numeration confused and some front leaves missing. Restored, c.1983-85.

Number of Folia
241 folia. Small 8cm insert between 96 and 97. Foliation/pagination is confused. Foliation in Roman switches to foliation in Arabic then to pagination in Arabic then to pagination in a combination of Arab ic on verso and Roman on recto then back to foliation in Roman, all in the first 52 folia. More changes follow. See notes for details.
Writing Support
Parchment, heavily soiled, flesh and hair sides are difficult to differentiate.
Measured 34v. Page 370mm x 270mm. Staves and text 275mm x 195mm. Text 255mm x 195mm.
34v. Five line musical staff, four lines in bl ack ink, one in red. Stylus and ink. Two vertical lines frame text. The outer line is 52mm from edge of page. Inner is 30mm from gutter. Vertical lines extend to top and bottom of page. One horizontal line at bottom of text extends to edge and gutter. It is 60mm from bottom of page. No corresponding line at top of text was detected on this or nearby pages.

Catchwords: 4v conus, 12v hostia laud, 28v Dautitas, 59v mostly trimmed but probably Ad, 67v tus nam ipse, 91v almost completely trimmed, 99v mostly trimmed but probably nomen, 139v cumulos.
16th century pigskin binding, not contemporary. Probably hand- tooled. German. Metalwork probably not contemporary with binding. Binding evaluation by Melissa Conway.

Gothic textualis.
Scroll work initials in red and blue. In many locations throughout the book there are humorous face s and scroll work drawn in ink attached to capital letters. Most faces are in profile but some are frontal, including a devil in red ink sticking his tongue out folio 128 verso.
Black ink for text and musical notes and musical staves. Each musical staff has one red ink line. Capital letters highlighted in red. Some capital letters in red or blue.

Foliation notes. A black ink page number appears on folio 1 recto and continues through folio 6. Black ink Roman folio numbers appear on rectos starting with folio 2. The Roman folio numbers switch to Arabic on folio 30 recto and then switch to Arabic on every page on folio 39 verso. On folio 48 recto the Roman numeral (lvii) appears but folio 48 verso has the Arabic (58) and folio 49 recto has a Roman numeral (lviiii). This switching between Arabic on verso and Roman on recto continues (including insert folio 50) through folio 52 recto (lxv). Folio 53 recto has Roman lxvi in red (red ink for Roman folio numbers started on 51 recto) and the Roman sequence on recto continues through folio 148 recto (clxii) where a new hand appears on 149 recto (clxiii), but still us ing Roman numerals. Another change of hand, but still using Roman, occurs on folio 180 recto (cxciiii). Roman continues through folio 222 recto (ccxxxvii) but it changes to Arabic on folio 223 (238). The Arabic continues on recto to folio 226 recto (241) but ends with Arabic on 226 verso (242). Roman starts again on 227 recto (ccxliii) and continues on recto through folio 237 (ccliii). On folio 238 recto foliation switches again to Arabic (254) and con tinues through folio 239 recto (255) before switching to Roman on 240 recto (cclvi) which continues to end on folio 241 recto (cclvii). Quire notes. Two stubs before folio 1. Two stubs and insert after folio 49 (insert stub appears after folio 59). An 8cm mini-stub appears after folio 94 and an 8cm wide insert with musical notation appears between folia 96 and 97. Stub after folio 221. Stub after 234 that is conjugate with folio 241. There are two stubs after 234 but before the stub that is conjugate with folio 241. They are sewn in but seem to be of a different texture and may be paper. If parchment they do not make sense with quire XXX or with quire XXXI.
